Partially understruck Kennedy half from the bank
I picked up a batch of halves at the bank a couple days ago, and while I didn't find even a single 40%, this one caught my eye:
http://imagedough.com/id/192/719/999..._1199_crop.JPG Notice that there is almost no relief on the left and right sides of the front of the coin--the "LI" and "TY" in LIBERTY and the I and part of the N and part of the S and all of the last T in "IN GOD WE TRUST" appear to not have been stamped. The reverse side of the coin looks uniform in its relief. I can't say I've ever seen anything like this personally. Any idea what this might be worth if in fact it is a true understrike? |

Huh, I personally have no idea, but that sure is neat. Good eye.
Looking forward to hearing more. How is the obverse? Normal? |
Re: Partially understruck Kennedy half from the bank
Looks like a grease strike through to me. What happens is grease builds up in the die and when it strikes the coins, certain portions of the die are filled with grease and don't transfer the strike to the planchet. I have a dime w/ full details but it's missing one number in the date, it reads "200". It would be considered a mint error, but they're not dramatically rare. That one looks pretty good, let me know if you want to trade it. I'll give you $1.00 face in 90% silver, I'll pay shipping both ways.

Yep, I say it is a grease strike also. I wouldn't buy it from you.
